At Court Ave Counseling, we believe that mental health services are something to be excited about, not scared of. We strive to create a space where it feels safe to be yourself and talk about the stressors of life.
Our approach is compassionate, practical and grounded in the values that built us here in small town Iowa. Our mission is to change the view of “therapy” in our rural community and make it something that everyone can utilize without fear of judgement. We are proud to provide professional, confidential counseling that is accessible to everyone.

Makayla Baur, t-LMHC
Hi! I am Makayla. I’m a temp licensed Mental Health Counselor who believes therapy should be a place where you feel heard, understood and supported. I grew up here in Winterset, so I know the struggles of mental health care in rural communities. I am passionate about making mental health something that everyone feels comfortable with by meeting them where they are and finding tools that really work for their lives. I love bringing people in who aren't sure about the idea of therapy, and turning it into something they love doing. My approach is very person-centered, not overly clinical.
I have experience working with children, teens, adults and families across a variety of settings. My background includes working in an inpatient mental health facility with kids and teens, working in the school setting both as a trauma-informed classroom associate and in school-based therapy, and supporting children and families navigating the child welfare and court system.
I strive to create a comfortable and collaborative environment where clients can be honest about what they are experiencing and work toward positive changes.
